There was a lot to be learned from the science methods course this semester. I think one of the biggest influences it had on me was to literally change the way I thought about science and how to teach it. In this course, things were extremely hands-on. Whether the students were shown a demonstration or given an individual experiment to complete, there was constant engagement and minimal dry lecturing. I think this is very important to consider in the classroom as a teacher. Many lesson can be made into something much more than just talking at students or reading, which is what I had grown to understand a science class to be.
This course also taught me how to give students more control in the classroom through inquiry and encouraging students to ask questions and complete extension activities. I think it is important for students to have a say in their learning and to be responsible for it. When forming a lesson, it is important for a teacher to think about things from both a teacher's perspective as well as a student's perspective to come up with the more effective lessons.
